If you get the following message in your logs and clamd refuses to start:

run freshclam manually and then start clamd again. Optionally you can manually remove all *.inc directories from your DatabaseDirectory.

Upgrading between 0.93.x versions is possible without uninstalling as long as none of the ClamAV processes are running. After that, set the permissions correctly, and run freshclam with the appropriate privileges and you should be good. I was able to do this with 0.93.1 and 0.93.3.
